Swollen Lymph Nodes: When It Is an Infection and When to Check for Lymphoma in Hyderabad
How long a swollen node can be watched, and when it needs a specialist in Hyderabad.
Quick answer. Lymph nodes often swell with a throat, ear, or skin infection and then shrink over two to three weeks. A node that keeps growing, feels hard, comes with night sweats or weight loss, or stays enlarged after the infection has gone should be examined. Lymphoma is diagnosed with a biopsy, not by feel alone.
Lymph nodes are small filters in the neck, armpits, and groin. They swell when they are working, which is why a sore throat often brings a tender neck node. They should shrink as the infection leaves. A node that does not follow that story is the one that needs a longer look.
Which pattern fits an ordinary infection?
The node appears with a fever, cough, tooth, or skin infection. It is often tender. It becomes smaller over the next two to three weeks. Children and young adults have reactive nodes more often than lymphoma. Even then, a node that keeps growing needs examination rather than another course of the same antibiotic.
Which pattern should be checked for lymphoma?
- A node larger than about 2 centimetres that is still growing after several weeks
- A hard, fixed node, or nodes in more than one area
- Drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or itching
- A node that remains after the infection that seemed to cause it has gone
None of these proves lymphoma. Tuberculosis and other infections also cause persistent nodes in India. The point of a specialist visit is to choose the right next test, not to start cancer treatment from the examination.
How is lymphoma actually diagnosed?
If the node needs tissue, a biopsy is planned so that enough material is taken for the subtype. A needle test sometimes helps, but many lymphomas need a larger sample before treatment is chosen. Blood tests and a scan come alongside, not instead of, that step. People in Hyderabad can start that sorting at AOI Hospital, Nallagandla, or S&S Clinic, Manikonda. The lymphoma page explains treatment only after the subtype is known.
Questions patients ask
How long should a swollen node be watched?
A node that appears with a clear infection and is already shrinking can be reviewed in about two to three weeks. A node that is growing, or still large after the infection has settled, should not be watched for months.
Does a painful node mean it is not cancer?
Pain is more common with infection, but it does not rule lymphoma out. Size, duration, and other symptoms matter more than tenderness alone.
Is an ultrasound enough to exclude lymphoma?
No. Ultrasound can describe the node. Lymphoma is confirmed or excluded by examining tissue, usually a biopsy, when the clinical picture warrants it.
Who should review a persistent node in Hyderabad?
A hemato-oncologist reviews nodes that may be lymphoma. Dr. G. Stitha Pragna consults at AOI Hospital, Nallagandla, and S&S Clinic, Manikonda.
